Honduras

Honduras is an impoverished country with the highest level of income inequality in all of Latin America. With more than 60 percent of the population living in poverty and one of the world’s highest murder rates, Honduras faces many serious barriers to progress.

Unemployment, gang violence and a widespread lack of opportunity contribute to the challenging landscape. Chronic malnutrition is rampant in Honduras especially in rural areas where up to 48 percent of children can be affected. Infant and child mortality rates are also high.

Honduras remains one of the most vulnerable countries to natural disasters in the world, frequently being affected by severe droughts that deplete the availability of basic crops.

Food For The Poor began serving the poor of Honduras in 1999, shortly after the country was devastated by Hurricane Mitch.
